TEN YEARS AND COUNTING! Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this database since it was launched in 1999.
Plants of the Family Iridaceae occur in a wide variety of habitats across the globe. Irises are species belonging to the Genus Iris. Irids are species related to Irises but belonging to other genera such as Gladiolus or Tigridia.
They can be found in the tundra, temperate forests, grasslands, swamps, deserts, mountains, coasts, and tropical rainforests. They are on every continent and major island including Madagascar, New Zealand, Tasmania, Greenland, Hawaii, and Japan.
Unfortunately there is a surprising lack of information available on many of these species. And some of them are rather mixed up and misnamed in commerce. That's why the members of SIGNA have put together this website... to help to identify species visually by flowers, seeds, seed pods, etc. This database is fully interactive so that anyone can submit additional material directly to the site.
Identification can be very challenging. Even iris experts can disagree about classification of some species. This database relies on the knowledge and expertise of the people that submit the photos & data. And anyone can confirm or contest information previously entered.
Special thanks go to Rodney Barton whose North American Native Iris website was the inspiration for this database.
